10 sweetest moments after Scottie Scheffler wins PGA

Hello, friends, welcome to this week’s Rogers report! It was my last week in Boston and then back on the road for a while (hi, our women are open!), and I longed to get back there and see some golf in person. Side note: If you have any ice cream recommendations in Hartford, Wisconsin (or Hartford, Connecticut, Connecticut) as I will be there in a few weeks), please let me know!
Scottie Scheffler had another huge victory Sunday night, but don’t worry, I won’t take you through all the pictures he hit. Instead, I will focus on his 10 best moments after the Quail Hollow win. And Jim Nantz, if you’re reading this: I’m frustrated that you’re not combining “from prison to quail”! The winning call to enter the 72nd hole. I know you’re an expert, but that’s Correct There. There will always be next time.
OK, please look at something.
Schefler greeted his family
I will never get tired of a few things about golf. In the final round, people saw tigers in Sunday’s red. Another one was my friend and colleague who said, “That’s great.” Third place was Scottie and Meredith Scheffler hugged each other after winning. Let’s face it, we see a lot in the way Shefleur plays.
Meredith Scheffler is one of my favorite golf characters. I can see these two being Jack and Barbara Nicklaus entering the world of golf in 50 years and if I could have another person’s closet, it would definitely be hers. Her sun hat may prevent us from seeing Schefflers’ hugs, but we can always hear her words: “I’m proud of you,” she goes to her husband again and again. They are so, so healthy, and I am a fan of the first couple of golf.
You might notice that Bennett Scheffler, who is only one year old, is as cold as this. I think he’s done it all before. Actually, he did a lot of time. Six, to be precise. He has won evenly every two months of his life. This is nothing new to young Bennett.

Next, we have Scottie Scheffler greet his parents, Scott and Diane.
Sffler’s father has the sweetest message for his 28-year-old son: “The words can’t describe what we’ve just seen. You’re the strongest person and the cutest boy. I’m proud of you. Thank you for never giving up, Scotty. I’m proud.”
I can’t even imagine what it feels like to teach your kids to walk, take them to junior golf competitions, cheer them up in college, and watch them become world’s first and third-time Grand Slam champions. At some point, it has to feel like a big dream, and I can’t help but cry in this sweet family moment. For a family that produces the best golfers on Earth, Schefflers certainly look normal.
Scheffler sticks to Bennett
All dads may have something to do with the feeling they need to get some work done, but want to hang out with their kids. Maybe you have to send an email or two between innings between minor league games. Maybe you’ll call with the kids on the McDonald’s drive route. Or, if you’re a Scottie Scheffler, you’ll sign your big scorecard – but he’ll only stay for a few minutes after putting the kid down with a hat and yardage.
For Schefller, the details of this situation may be a little different, but I like the universality of “let me keep my kids busy for a minute so I can get the job done is for parents around the world.
It looks like Little Bennett has had a grand time on the score. I really hope these photos are framed somewhere, mainly because they are cute and have great memories, but also because one day Bennett Scheffler will realize how crazy it was to change his life in the first year and this photo will prove it.
Trophy ceremony
Scottie Scheffler learned to keep us on our toes. He won the 2022 Masters with four holes. He may have won five wins in Sunday’s PGA Championship, but he played enough time in the first nine games, about 30 minutes, and we wonder if Ram will catch him. Just when we thought he was really used to the trophy ceremony, the top of Wanamaker fell off.
To be fair, it is definitely not Scheffler’s fault. The trophy was supposed to be lifted above the winner’s head, and the two-person trophy was a logistical nightmare for this situation. If the story feels familiar, it is because it is. Collin Morikawa did the same thing in 2020. This is definitely not a user error. I suggest they fuse the trophy off, but the pros can’t fill it with alcohol (or ice cream!), so I guess it’s just something that future PGA champions need to be aware of.
Either way, Schefler handles it like a champion. As it turns out, the trophy really broke a little bit.
I also really like Scheffler taking some time before the trophy ceremony to really attend.
“Others can get it”
When I think of the most interesting people on the tour, I usually think of Max Homa. But, to be fair, Schefler’s comedy timing is also good. When Scheffler learned that he was taking the trophy photos on Sunday, he placed Wanamaker on the ground, raised his hand over his head, and said, “Others can get it!” Walk away and laughed.
A quick Google search tells me that the Wanamaker trophy weighs 27 pounds. It is 28 inches tall, 10.5 inches in diameter, and handle to handle 27 inches. Guys, that’s not light! In fact, this is one of the heaviest trophysical sport. The Stanley Cup weighs 34.5 pounds, but this is usually held by a few guys. So, Schefler, I don’t blame you for trying to get rid of that. It sounds like a workout.
More Scottie and Bennett
It wasn’t until I started covering the golf tournament myself that I realized that it was just how much a player would do after winning. There is a trophy ceremony. Everyone has photos. There were winning press conferences and maybe some other things I forgot. Therefore, the sweet moments of players greeting their families are usually quick, as the champion has a lot to do before he gets home at night. However, when Scottie does these things, Schefflers always stick with it. Usually, Scheffler’s parents and Meredith are seen at the media center to watch his press conference, which they held on Sunday at Quail Hollow. It’s not the norm, but it shows how close they are to all of them and how excited they are to Scottie.
So when Scheffler completes the trophy ceremony, it’s time to take a photo with Wanamaker. Schefler kept holding his son, but it was time to have that photo with his coach. You could say Schefller is more concerned about having to leave his son for a second than returning to his trophy. Bennett definitely doesn’t want to be separated from his father. But the whole thing makes CBS capture the wonderful moments for all of us.
When Scheffler finished, he returned to Bennett.
Another family wins
So technically, Scottie Scheffler isn’t there in the following sweet moments, but the rest of his people are in it and are therefore included. When the world of golf has the same gaze at the world No. 1 and Wanamaker Trophy, Schefflers’ eyes are set on Bennett, who seems to be standing on two feet for the first time. Meredith, her parents and Scottie’s parents applauded as Bennett struggled to keep his balance.
It’s safe to say that for some members of the Scheffler family, it’s a huge Sunday for Quail Hollow. Whether you win a professional or stand up, there are plenty of celebrations this week.
Scheffler’s Golf Room
To end everything about PGA Scottie Scheffler, we let him talk about his golf room.
Q: If you try to go home and bring the trophy into the house, you’re kidding before that. That’s a big one. I mean, where are you going?
Scheffler: “Where is it going? I have a room in my house called ‘Golf Room’, and that’s all my crap, literally. It’s just a room full of all my golf trash. I also have some trophys, and that’s probably that.”
First of all, I would love to know about this golf room. Is the trophy on the shelves there, or is it just a trophy scattered on the floor? Also, how many trophys are we talking about? Scheffler won the PGA Tour No. 15 title on Sunday, but if he had trophies there, there were plenty. I also think this answer shows how normal it might be for the rest of his life. He is not flashing on his trophy like some of us (my way really If I had such talent. Good for Scottie. This made me even more grateful to him.
