Alaska soldiers report skiers trapped in multiple remote areas near Anchorage

Alaska soldiers said Wednesday that multiple skiers were reportedly trapped in remote areas of Alaska.

The number of skiers and their conditions are not immediately available.

The slideshow took place Tuesday afternoon, near the ski community in Gidwood, about 64 kilometers south of Anchorage, Alaska Soldier spokesman Austin McDaniel said in an article with the Associated Press.

“The soldiers received a report on the avalanche that captured multiple people near the 20-mile River West Fork yesterday afternoon,” McDaniel said. “They are trying to restore the skiers’ company to ski, but they cannot recover due to the depth of the snow.”

The size of the avalanche and the depth of the snow are not yet known.

He said soldiers will try to reach the site on Wednesday, and it may take planes to reach remote locations on the Seward Expressway.

Girdwood is Alaska’s ski capital and home to the Alyeska hotel at the Mount Alyeska base, where people ski or snowboard. The top of the mountain are seven glacier restaurants, named after their vision.

According to the National Avalanche Center, 25 to 30 people die in avalanches in the United States every winter.
