High school public houses look very different from school, school and region to region. Whether your high school calls it a “back-to-school night,” “satisfactory night,” “open day,” “course night,” or otherwise, the goal remains the same: connect with nursing staff to ensure a positive learning environment and understand students’ academic requirements.
Some schools are on these nights before the start of the school year, and some are after this. Some let students participate, while others focus only on carers. Some give each teacher a 15-minute slot, while others may ask the caregiver to choose which teachers they meet. No matter how your school works, these high school open day ideas will help you interact with everyone attending the conference.
1. Start opening the house by organizing
Just like you plan to attend classes, plan the work you want to accomplish during the high school open day. Use similar classroom organization skills to prepare any folders, notes, handouts or newsletters you want to introduce or give to the nursing staff and set an agenda for the evening. This saves you time and provides students and caregivers with what your class looks like.

2. Help everyone get to know each other
As the name “Enjoy Teacher’s Night” suggests, the paramedics are there to know you. To have a successful high school open day, caregivers must be made aware of who they are. By doing so, you assure them that their students are in good shape and lay the foundation for future open communication.
High school open days are often the first time you meet a student’s caregiver, which means you know nothing about their life outside the classroom. 3. Keep it short and sweet
It is important to remember that your classroom is not the only caregiver to visit during the high school open day. Middle school students usually have four to nine teachers. For caregivers with multiple high school students, this makes busy nights full of information! From course transparency to making connections and leverage time to hone your main priorities in a straightforward, concise way, from course transparency to making connections.
4. Have clear expectations for students and caregivers
Nursing staff are your partner in helping students learn and grow. In order to function well as a team, everyone needs to know their role. Be transparent with your students and their caregivers about your class’s expectations, rules and guidelines.
As students learn in high school and learn to become more independent, caregivers support and engagement may change. Keep this in mind, as students and caregivers may need guidance to make a smooth transition. Distribute syllabus, browse the material list, and recommend study habits and strategies to ensure everyone has the tools to succeed in the class, regardless of grade.

6. Set the stage for two-way communication
As a teacher, you set the tone for communicating with your students’ caregivers during high school open days. Building open and honest communication goes a long way in building trust with caregivers. However, it is also important to make sure you have communication methods and boundaries that align with school policies and work for you.
Consider talking to your administrator before high school opening day for guidance and advice. Then, when the time for your open day introduction comes, you can share contact information and communication preferences with confidence. This information may include office hours, the set time you will respond to emails, how to provide feedback to students and the situations shared with caregivers, what are worth an email instead of a phone call, and more.
