Two-time Major Champion Angel Cabrera will debut in Augusta National for the first time since he was sentenced to a long prison sentence. But a few days before the 2025 Masters began, Cabrera achieved a different result: she won the PGA Tour event.
Cabrera’s prison experience
From 2021 to 2023, Cabrera was imprisoned for 30 months between different facilities in Brazil and Argentina. He was eventually tried and was found guilty of two mana attacks on his ex-girlfriend Cecilia Torres. Then in 2022, he was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Micaela Escudero.
Cabrera was released from prison in August 2023 and in 2024 he returned to the PGA Tour champion’s competitive golf ball. Last season, the 55-year-old played 12 games on the senior track and finished two top ten.
Cabrera said two weeks ago Daily Mail:
“Now, I’m fine,” Cabrera said. “But I regret everything in the past.
Cabrera’s PGA Tour Champion
After his successful 2024 season, Cabrera is on the PGA Tour again this year. He finished T19 in the opening match of Trophy Hassan II in February. Then came last week.
After announcing that he will return to the Masters this year, Cabrera put it into practice at the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational. Initially, he was a replacement for the event, but the later withdrawal earned him a place.
He counted it.
Cabrera was hot, shooting 68 and 66 after the first and second rounds, at least maintaining the lead.
Cabrera grinded a 71 shot on Sunday, featuring the late birdie at the age of 17, beating KJ Choi with two shots. It marks a victory for Cabrera’s first-place PGA Tour champion, and any kind of victory he has in his decade.
“It’s been so exciting after the past few years, I’ve been through the past few years,” Cabrera told reporters on Sunday. “So, getting these opportunities here again and winning me again. Obviously, it’s an uphill battle.”
The Master of Cabrera returns
Cabrera, who won the 2009 Masters and the 2007 U.S. Open, was invited to compete in the 2024 Masters as a past champion.
But his visa issues prevented Cabrera from returning to Augusta. Thanks to the resolution of the visa issue, Cabrera was once again given an invitation from Augusta State Chairman Fred Ridley, and this time he was able to accept it.
In his recent Daily Mail During the interview, Cabrera talked about the importance of a second chance in his professional golf career while in prison.
“This is one of the worst things that can happen to humans, not being able to get freedom. Lack of freedom is really hard, it’s really hard,” Cabrera said. “On the other hand, you know, I can tell you that the most important thing I have now is a second chance, a chance to get back on the right track.”
His unexpected victory Sunday showed that at least in his game, he was back on that track. He will have another chance this week at Augusta National.
After Sunday’s victory, Cabrera said he wasn’t ready to turn his attention to the master. Instead, he hopes to taste his unlikely victory for a while.
“Now, I want to enjoy this,” he said. “I’m going to be the master walking in the cave, but I want to enjoy this now.”
