German police stop earning stripes through zebra-loaded van

German police found themselves face-to-face with two zebras, six monkeys and several other exotic animals after parked on a van on the Dutch border, the force said on Monday.

The federal police said in a statement that there were also antelope, swans, buzz and a servant on board – a small wild cat native to Africa.

Police made a check on a Polish registered vehicle entering through Bunde on the Dutch border in northwestern Germany on Friday.

The two Poles, aged 23 and 31, were unable to provide proof of where any animals came from or required documents.

Police also said the animals were not safely loaded in a van, adding that they were investigating alleged violations of animal protection and wildlife protection rules.

Police said the van was stopped into Germany when the animals were handed over to authorities in the Netherlands, where they were cared for in the shelter.
