NATO and Japan deepen defense ties amid threats from Russia, China

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba agreed on Wednesday that his cooperation with NATO in the defense industry has deepened his national cooperation in the face of global security threats from China and Russia.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, speaking in the media after a meeting in Tokyo, highlighted the “critical” period of the Defense Alliance’s cooperation with Japan during the “critical” period in the European Atlantic and Indo-Pacific.

Rutte and Ishiba said Japan and NATO will jointly develop cutting-edge technologies that can be used for civilian and military purposes.

Japan and NATO have intensified their partnership since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and many in Asia are concerned that what happened today in Ukraine today could happen in the South China Sea if China invades Taiwan.

Ishiba said Tokyo welcomed the growing participation of the Defense Alliance in the region, adding that NATO’s stronger NATO will greatly benefit Japan.
