Grok now remembers what you said, here’s how to stop it

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company XAI adds memory to its flagship AI, called Grok. The announcement was released Wednesday on Musk’s social media platform X, and information on how memory features work, similar to other AI models. When you talk to Grok, it picks up tidbits about your likes, dislikes, preferences, and interests, and then uses that information to tailor it directly to your response.
Chat GPT and Google’s Gemini AI both added memory in 2024, and now both can remember conversations for a long time, giving you more personalized answers. In the XAI example, the user asks Grok to perform a workout routine. AI responds by mentioning that users have asked about “dynamic, high-energy activities and fitness trends like jumping rope and weightlifting trends.” Grok then conducted a workout routine to combine these elements.
This is what the data control settings accessed from Grok.com look like.
When referencing an old conversation, Grok’s UI has a button that allows you to view the previous conversations it references. Users can also view what Grok remembers and can manually adjust it to make Grok forget what he has learned. Grok’s new memory is available on Beta with official iOS and Android apps. It is suitable for free and advanced Grok users.

How to turn off memory
Despite being in Beta, the feature is enabled by default, or at least what we tried. The good news is that you can turn on Grok’s conversation history mode at will. So if you don’t want Grok to remember everything you’re telling, here’s how to stop it.
-
grok.com: Click on your profile picture and then click Settings. Navigate to the data control. This feature is “Personalize the history of conversations with you”. Switch it to Disable.
-
Android and iOS apps: Open Settings and navigate to the Data Control. Here, the feature is “personalized memory”. Toggle it to disable the feature.
In addition, users can switch private chat mode by using ghost icons in the chat box. Grok does not store the details of the conversation in private chat mode. When you enter the application data control, you can also disable Grok in the conversation, and the X history cannot be used.
