Google tries to get college students and Gemini’s free year-highest year-long fascinated with AI
In no case, you should let AI do your homework for you, but Google decided to make that option easier next year. The company will offer free one year of Google One AI Advanced, access to things like AI assistants in Google Workspace and Gemini Live, and to any college student willing to sign up.
The offer gives you a sample platter of Google’s latest AI features, which usually costs $20 per month, and is mainly focused on what you can use for Gemini. These include experimental products such as NotebookLM for analyzing documents, as well as agitation of remixed images and videos. Because this is a Google program, you will also get 2TB of Google Drive storage for the PDF parade that makes up college life.
You can sign up for a free quote on the Google website. You need to be at least 18 years of age, have a “.edu” email address and join by June 30, 2025, but once you do so, you will have the Google One AI Advanced Program until July 2026. Google says you need to verify that you are still a student in 2026, but otherwise, the whole thing is a lightning promotion. Even if you don’t care about AI, it’s worth registering for free.
Google’s intention here is obviously not pure. Free storage is great, but if the company can use AI to regenerate, it can change the occasional useful novelty to be essential. Even if this proves the money the company spends on AI R&D, it cannot be beneficial for critical thinking or test scores.
