Ghana’s president suspends chief justice in unprecedented move

Ghanaian President John Mahama suspended the country’s chief justice – a move that marked the first place in the country’s history.

An investigation has been conducted and three unpublished petitions have been filed to file charges against Gertrude Torkornoo calling for her permanent removal.

Ghana’s chief judges enjoy term safety – meaning they can only remove him from the office for a few reasons, including incompetence and misconduct.

The contents of the petition have not been made public, she has not commented, and the former attorney general of Ghana claims her suspension was an attempt to undermine the judiciary.

“I think it’s a complete charm,” Godfred Yeboah Dame told the BBC.

“This is right [judiciary] In the history of the country, the greatest attack on the independence of the judiciary under the constituent constitution of this country. ”

Ms. Torkornoo is Ghana’s third female chief justice and was nominated by former President Nana Akufo Ador in 2023.

She has the responsibility to oversee the judicial administration in Ghana.

Ms. Torkono survived a request for dismissal earlier this year, when former President Akufo-Addo said the petition was cited as “several shortcomings.”

There were no initial copies of the three most recently submitted petitions for Ms. Torkornoo.

But some lawyers argued that the detention of the documents was a violation of Ms. Torkono’s right to a fair hearing.

A copy of the petition was then given to the Chief Justice, allowing her to respond to the allegations privately and in writing.

The five-member committee will invite Ms. Torkornoo to respond again to the petition and then decide in the final decision whether or not it should be removed from the office.
