Sudanese military plane crashes in residential area
State media said at least 46 people were killed and 10 others were injured in a residential area in the capital Khartoum after a Sudanese military plane crashed in a residential area in Omdman.
Russian-made Antoninov plane landed Tuesday night after taking off from the military’s Wady Sedna Air Force Base, killing officers and civilians.
The cause of the crash is not clear, but it is quoted as saying that it is likely to be a technical malfunction.
The crash occurred in the Paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF), which was fighting with the Army, said it had fought a fighter jet in South Darfur.
The conflict destroyed much of Sudan – including Khartoum and Omdman – and thousands were killed and about 12 million were displaced.
The Ministry of Health said the emergency team drove injured civilians, including children, to a nearby hospital after Tuesday’s plane crash.
Reuters reported that a senior army commander in Khartoum was killed.
Witnesses said a loud explosion occurred when the plane collapsed and several homes were damaged, according to AFP.
It added that the crash also caused power outages in nearby communities.
Sudan has been hit by a civil war since April 2023, when the Army and the RSF were involved in a vicious power struggle.
The war had split the country, with the army controlling the north and east, while the RSF occupied most of the Darfur region in the west and south.
In recent weeks, the Army has recaptured a portion of Khartoum and its surrounding areas from the RSF.
