Photo: Pope Francis’s Last Journey

Pope Francis, by plane and boat, walking and electric popemobile, another year of travel, his pope has arrived in dozens of countries on five continents.

His first official trip outside Rome was in 2013 to Lampedusa, a tiny Mediterranean island that has become a gateway for immigration. Soon after, he flew to the mountains of Bolivia and rode the streets of Philadelphia and New York. He visited Mosul, an Iraqi city that was destroyed by war, met crowds in South Sudan, the world’s newest country, and crisscrossed in Mongolia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

As his health became vulnerable in the months before his death, his movements were increasingly limited to a circle of thousands of miles, his humble residence in a hotel in the Vatican. After his death on April 21, Vatican officials moved into the final journey: a funeral parade to the church, where he will be buried as the 266th Pope.
