The man suspected of killing worshippers in French mosque has surrendered to Italian police

PARIS (AP) – Authorities said Monday that a Muslim worshiper suspected of killing French mosques has turned himself to police in Italy.

French police began searching for suspects after the attack on Friday in La Grande Combe in southern France. Local media said the attacker recorded the attack on his cell phone, and security camera footage showed him shouting insults to God.

The French Interior Minister’s Office said on Monday that the suspect did not elaborate on surrendering to police in Italy.

Local prosecutor Abdelkrim Grini said on Sunday that investigators were considering “this is the possibility of Islamophobia. This is the act we engage in first, but it is not the only one,” he said.

Prosecutors said the suspect was a person born in France in 2004 and he lives in the area with no criminal record.

“Racism and hatred based on religion will never have a place in France,” said French President Emmanuel Macron. “Religious freedom is inviolable.”

The Grand Mosque in Paris condemned the attack in a statement and said the victim was a young man, with only Aboubakar in the French media, who had just cleaned the mosque when he was killed.

A march was held in La Grand Combe, Los Angeles on Sunday to support the victims and a gathering against crimes against Islam was held in Paris.
