Mackenzie Hughes, Cristobal del Solar Share Myrtle Beach leads

MORTLEBEI, South Carolina – Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes scored a spot in the second round of lead at Cristobal del Solar in Myrtle Beach Clashing on Friday with a 69-shot score in strong winds.

Hughes advanced after the opening 63, with four birdies and two bogeys in his afternoon round at Dune Golf and Beach Club.

“I’m going into a great place for the weekend,” Hughes said. “There are a lot of people out there who have the chance. There’s nothing going on tomorrow. Just keep doing my thing and see where it puts me.”

Del Solar bounced from a bogey on the eighth pole and closed the birdie on the third pole. He shot 67 in the afternoon and joined Hughes with 132 shots below 10.

“I’ve been doing this job and playing golf well and it feels more comfortable,” Del Solar said. “I’m glad to be who I am.”

The winner of the PGA Tour Event – a signature event held at the TRUIST Championship this week – if it is not qualified yet, it will earn a place in the PGA Championship. Hughes, a two-time tour champion, is already in Quail Hollow’s game next week.

Nick Watney, a 44-year-old player who has not won the championship in 13 years, also shot with Harry Higgs (66), Will Chandler (69) and Davis Shore (66) after 67.
