Maybe you’ve heard of: Rory McIlroy uses a new driver’s head this week at the PGA Championship.
McIlroy converted from his former gamer Taylormade Qi10 (DOT) to another identical model, which is his backup. Usually, this is not a story, but since it’s McIlroy, the second player in the world who just finished a professional grand slam, it’s news.
This is what we know
No. 1: McIlroy hasn’t talked about this week, but we know he turned his head because we filmed McIlroy’s driver in Philadelphia last week (Left, bottom), the club’s soles have obvious wear marks. Driver McIlroy has been using Quail Hollow (Below) There are no identical flaws.

No. 2: McIlroy’s driving took a step back Thursday. He led the PGA Tour in a stroke: More than one-tenth of the stroke in the opener (.869) and ranked second in the Truist Championship last week. In the first round of Quail Hollow, McIlroy scored only 0.037, missing three drives in the remaining three drives in 15, 16 and 18, nearly dehydrated each time, and had two bogeys at the age of 16. In 74 starts, Micilroy looked more like 1.268 in Friday’s game, although he hit 1.268 on No. 69, but he hit 10 on No. 69, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 99, which is the number of 1 matches. round.
No. 3: We still don’t know why McIlroy had to change drivers. During McIlroy’s second round, Siriusxm reported that McIlroy’s old driver chief was deemed “no longer allowed.” Host Taylor Zarzour said:[McIlroy] It won’t be available this week – if you want, his gamers. It is considered no longer allowed. Whether it’s a rupture or something happens to the head. Rory [was] Siriusxm staff member Jason Sobel later tweeted that the driver was considered “USGA failed.” USGA’s driver test at Quail Hollow this week, just like on the PGA Tour, randomly selected 30 players.
Neither USGA nor US PGA confirmed McIlroy’s driver failed to perform the test, citing the confidential nature of its testing process. Players themselves are free to discuss test results, as Xander Schauffele did in the 2019 Open Championship, when his driver was considered unqualified. McIlroy declined media interviews Thursday and Friday.
U.S. Chief Championship official Kerry Haigh issued a statement Saturday afternoon confirming the USGA test, but he did not name it. Declare read:
“The testing program is consistent with the level of support the USGA provides for the PGA Tour and other champions, which is part of their regular driver testing program. The standard process is about one-third of the area that is conducted under the program. In the case of Quail Hallow, this week’s Quail Hall. This week’s Quail Hall. It’s been found that the driver’s head is not a certain club, it’s a certain period of time, it’s a certain period of time, it’s a certain period of time, and it’s a certain period of event.

“The result has been kept confidential to protect the players, they don’t know that the club has failed and are not responsible except hitting the club thousands of times. The players are only required to replace heads when necessary, and if there is no problem, everyone can do it without problems.
Drivers face violations of legal restrictions are not the focus of your Sunday four-player player, but for mashers like McIlroy, who hit their drivers at the same location at 125+ mph, and the faces inevitably break over time and may even break over time.
All the clubs ended up wearing out. Professionals frequently change wedges every few weeks and change iron sets every year. Interestingly, wear makes the driver perform better (or at least faster) while other clubs are underperforming due to lack of spin.
USGA was introduced in the 2019-20 season to perform random tests of the game for drivers and players were selected based on Darrell survey information, meaning a manufacturer sample based on how many drivers each manufacturer has in playing the game.
How to know when a driver is approaching legal restrictions
During the PGA Tour event, you will find the driver’s heads on the wagon, marked with CT (character time), and they come out of the factory. Travel representatives are actually the heads picked for professionals Cherry Slower Longer face rot than retail stores available.
still, all Face wear.
Tour players’ driver failures meet tests more frequently than you think. Most players will just pop up new heads and move on. It’s no big deal. PING Tour Rep Keanton Oates told Golf.com that a decade ago, the head conversion of flying was more challenging, but with the right progress, it became easier to get two to three spare heads ready.
Callaway Tour Rep Kellen Watson told Golf.com that Jon Rahm failed to test ahead of the 2023 Genesis Invitational and continued to win.

The professional may not know when the driver is pushing upwards in the face of the limit, but the device representative knows these signs – i.e., when the ball starts to increase its speed and spin down.
“You’ll see some professionals say ‘stylish shots’,” Watson said. “Walk from the middle, go to the right, don’t rotate at all or from the middle, go to the left, don’t rotate at all. It’s just the material breaking down over time.”
All tour trucks are equipped with the same CT test machine used by USGA, so they can quickly determine whether a driver needs to be replaced before any test.
Watson said there is nothing you can do to mitigate the risk of failure of CT tests after two to six months of regular games. This is not a comment about how the driver is made or what materials are made of.
Watson provides an example of the metal fast racing stick with MLB power bats like Shohei Ohtani.
“It could take three swings, which will completely break,” he said. “So the material is rotting. The lifespan of the metal will never last.”
This is where the backup driver for Pro becomes crucial.
Rory McIlroy is not happy that the PGA is starting to be postponed. Then came 2 brightly colored words

Watson said McIlroy was particularly bad this week, no matter why he changed his head. Not only was it a big week, but the weather with limited practice time is likely to make it difficult for McIlroy to be satisfied with his backup.
Watson said this comfort is crucial. Watson said when Rahm failed the test in Genesis 2023, he and Rahm believed the backup was called Wednesday afternoon, but when the game started, it was another matter.
“He was great at iron and won the game,” he said.
Another factor to remember is that no 3-wood that is often tested by USGA like the driver can actually get “hot” as quickly as the driver, Ping Rep Oates said.
“In fact, because of the smaller head, the way these guys hit the turf, we actually have to focus on 3 woods,” Oates said.

Players are still waving 3 woods in 110 or 115 mph, how they interact with the turf can speed up the process of facial weakness. The smaller head also provides less facial support, which can lead to caves.
Bottom line
Regardless of the reason for the McIlroy swap, he has a brief window to make the new head comfortable – which seems to have led to some big misses in the Serving area on Thursday, which put him in pursuit of his second major title of the season.
McIlroy did not violate the rules or act as a driver deemed to be unqualified. This is not anything wrong with Taylormade.
This is just what happens when you have a player hitting a golf ball with a 125 mph carbon or metal object.
Give McIlroy time with his new players – he will be fine.
