X is experiencing an interruption in the data center

If you are having trouble using X today, you are not alone. Downdetector reported that as of 4 p.m. ET, more than 5,000 people had reported access to social media platforms. X’s official engineering account claims the problem was caused by an outage in the data center.

“X knows that some of our users are experiencing performance issues on the platform today,” X’s engineering account wrote. “We are experiencing outages in data centers and the team is actively working to resolve the issue.” The platform last experienced a massive power outage in March 2025. At the time, X CEO Elon Musk blamed it on a “massive cyberattack.” Security researchers who investigated the issue later said that X’s security is poor, leaving the company’s servers vulnerable to attacks.

Updated, May 22, 6:30 pm: Users are still reporting issues with access X, although the speed is lower than the peak at 3:40 p.m. ET. No update has been released since the X Project Report.

Updated, May 22, 9:35 pm: X is still in the interruption throughout the scene. wired A fire broke out in a data center rented by Elon Musk in Hillsboro, Oregon. It is not clear whether this is related to the current interruption.
