Almost four years have passed since Cameron Champ found the championship circle on the PGA Tour, but the 29-year-old is in an enviable position at the top of the RBC Canadian Open weekend.

The champion finished 62 games on Friday with a 66-shot finish, reaching 12 overall, and taking two shots in his closest rival, Andrew Putnam (-10).

Champ’s form has suffered losses in recent years after winning three PGA Tour titles between 2018 and 2021. Last year, he lost his PGA Tour card and was the eighth place on the RCMP Canadian Open Field this week. When he got the call, he had only one day ready to arrive in Toronto.

“For me, the past few years, it’s mostly in the course. I’ve even had some hard time here,” Champ said on Friday. “I finally took this, finally got some help and worked hard on it slowly, which was great.

He continued: “Again, for me, a little freedom is in a sense. “Really, like I said, looking back, it really didn’t really bother me. The last two days are just a great benefit – no relief, but I was able to play that way and it was a joy for me. I know it’s there. I just need my own way, please keep my own way and keep my way.

The champion will play alongside Putnam on Saturday afternoon with 1:50 ET.
