Piot’s first former LIV golfer receives sponsor invitation in PGA Tour Return

Former LIV golf rival James Piot will create PGA Tour history on Rocket Classic this week.
He was one of the first former LIV players to return to PGA and the first to receive a sponsor waiver on the PGA Tour, according to Golf Digest.
Piot, 26, is a native of Farmington Hills, Michigan and 2021 American amateur champion, played for the 2022 PGA Tour for the last time, missing out on the Masters and U.S. Open layoffs. He has never participated in LIV events since 2023, which means he is eligible for the Detroit event. PGA Tour rules provide a one-year ban on players competing for unauthorized events.
“There is a lot of support, and it’s one or the happiest call I’ve ever made,” Championship official Mark Hollis told the Detroit News. “He’s the guy we wanted to participate in the process from the beginning. It has to work in the way it’s performed.”
Piot is not the first LIV player to return to the PGA Tour. England’s Laurie Canter has played five games so far.
“It’s actually the coolest thing in the world,” Piot told the Detroit News. “It’s awesome. It’s just the fact that I can finally play in Rocket Classic, it’s a dream come true. I want to be a part of it since the schedule created the event.”
Piot became part of the first wave of players signed with Saudi-backed Liv Golf Courtile in the summer of 2022, agreeing to a two-year contract guaranteed by a reported $6 million.
He recorded only the top ten in Bangkok in October 2022. He also underwent shoulder surgery during that P.M.
PGA Tour rules require a one-year ban on players competing in unauthorized events such as Liv Golf. Piot met the criteria again in late October.
