Riverside firefighters fight the growing Mandalay fire; residents flee
On Sunday afternoon, Riverside City burned four recruits’ vegetation fires, consuming more than 60 acres and avoiding evacuation, officials said.
The Riverside Fire Department said on Facebook that the Mandalay fire caused heavy smoke, which caused 911 calls from residents. The department said five joint aid engine companies and Cal Fire participated in the firefight. According to observations, the progress of the fire stopped at around 4:30 pm.
Resident Amy Ashcraft, standing in the smoke of wildfires, said she and others were watching the fire and taking pictures near their houses.
“Suddenly, things got worse.” Ashcraft then began wetting the roof of the family until they were ordered to evacuate.
Forced evacuation was carried out in urban areas north of Arlington Avenue, south of the Santa Ana River Trail, east of Mitchell Avenue and Valley Avenue, and west of Jurapa and Crust Avenue.
