Cameron Young leads the North Carolina leader. But he is in the mindset of New York.
“I have a lot of good memories at the New York Open,” Young said. “And I’m sure the New York crowd wants to be around me at least to some extent.”
It was late at night at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro on Saturday, and Young just scored 65 points in the third round, which expanded his lead in the Wyndham Championship game. With only 18 holes left, he is top 5 goals ahead of the recent Chase and is trying not to lead himself.
Given that everything is at stake, it’s hard to do.
Young not only seeks his first PGA Tour victory. He also fished at a certain September competition, where he is from: the 2025 Ryder Cup held in Bethpage Black, Long Island in 2025.
“I think this location is first and foremost one of my favorite golf courses in the world,” Young said.
Young grew up in Westchester County, and his father was the head of the Sleepy Hollow Golf Club and looked comfortable in Sedgefield. This is not surprising. He played his own college golf at Wake Forest on the road with only 30 minutes.
But Bert Patch’s Ryder Cup is a natural topic for New York natives. This is especially resonant for Young, who failed to use him as the captain’s draft pick two years ago in the US Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson. Young, who ranked ninth in the Ryder Cup rankings, was the top player in the 2023 team, who lost 16.5-11.5 seats and 16.5-11.5 seats for the Europeans.
Young admits the feeling of being neglected.
“It was awful to miss it a few years ago,” he said. “I was ninth on the points list and didn’t get picked, so I was a little frustrated with it.”
Young said his intention at the start of the 2025 season was to “put our captain no choice.”
“I don’t know if I’m doing this, but from now on, that’s going to require some really good golf,” he said. “But if I have a problem, that’s a big goal for me and I want to put myself there anyway.”
First, Young tried to withdraw from Wyndham, a victory that would allow him to beat him after finishing second in seven careers and 23 top 10.
Young is currently ranked 19th in the Ryder Cup standings. The top six players automatically qualify, and the draft picks of the six captains surrounded the team. Sunday’s victory will surely attract our Captain Keegan Bradley.
But Young said he wasn’t counting on anything tomorrow or later. At least, that’s the idea.
“I tried to look at it, just pick up all the little things that happen every day,” he said. “But in my mind, I wanted to portray myself on that team.”
