Tourism Championships now offer the richest awards and offer $40 million in wallets
Owings Mills, Maryland – The Tour Championship now has the wealthiest individual bonus for golf, while the PGA Tour will have FedEx Cup Readoff Readoff hit rate for the first time to be officially funded. The total wallet is $40 million and the winner is $10 million.
Since the FedEx Cup began in 2007, the prize pool at the end of the Tour Championship was informal money, with some of it delayed.
The playoffs have been reduced from four tournaments in 2019 to three games, while the FedEx Cup reward pool has added bonuses.
With the introduction of the “starting stroke” of that year – the No. 1 seed started with a par 10 and took the lead in the No. 2 seed with two shots – whoever won the finale at East Lake, won the FedEx Cup and won the PGA Tour for winning the Tour.
Amid this year’s changes, starting strokes were eliminated, and the top 30 players entering the Tour Championship will all start from scratch like regular tournaments.
The $40 million prize pool will now be the official funding for East Lake, a PGA Tour spokesman confirmed Wednesday night.
In another change, the $25 million winning the FedEx Cup was spread. Scottie Scheffler, who won $10 million in the regular season, will earn $5 million after this week’s BMW Championship. This is still part of the bonus pool, not official funds.
But now that the player with the lowest score won the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup – the top 30 players who set aside $40 million will be formal, winning the $10 million championship.
Scheffler leads the currency list for $20,362,883. Masters champion Rory McIlroy ($16,156,418) and U.S. Open champion JJ Spaun ($12,302,222) will now have a mathematical opportunity, and if they win on East Lake, they will get a chance to surpass Scheffler.
The runner-up of East Lake received $5 million in official funding, while the third place received $3,705,000. The last one gets $355,000.
The last time East Lake had a formal wallet in 2018 was $9 million, and Tiger Woods won $1.62 million. Justin Rose won the FedEx Cup without winning the playoffs and received a $10 million prize.
Patrick Cantlay is one of several players who love the change, saying that winning the Tour title – even if one player ranks No. 30, is still worthy of being a FedEx Cup champion.
“I think at this point, if you played for a whole year and went to the Tour Championship with guys you used to play, that’s the 30 best players and beat them that week, that’s a huge achievement.”
