Steinmeier visits Chile in South America
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will continue his trip to Chile on Tuesday to South America.
Steinmeier plans to open the German-Chile Economic Conference first and visit the German schools in Santiago. In addition, the agenda of visiting the Museum of Memory and Human Rights is also on his agenda.
The museum was dedicated to victims of military dictatorship from 1973 to 1990 by General Augusto Pinochet. During this time, Chile had about 3,000 political murders and more than 30,000 political prisoners.
It was not until Wednesday that meeting with incumbent President Gabriel Boric. The day before, Steinmeier met with Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña in Asunción.
In San Diego, Steinmeier will also meet with people influenced by the Dignidad Colonia Dignidad theme. German lay missionary Paulschäfer moved from Germany to Chile with his followers in the early 1960s and established a settlement near the city of Parrill. For decades, he kept cult members working there until they were exhausted, tearing the family apart, and abused children in Germany and Chile.
During the military dictatorship under Pinochet, regime opponents were said to have been tortured and murdered in settlements.
Today, the area has been renamed Villa Baviera, which includes a restaurant operating there. For years, I have struggled to build a memorial for victims in Colonia Dignidad, Chile.
