Multiple HBCUS locks in response to threats

At least seven historic black colleges and universities nationwide were locked on Thursday after institutions received threats, without elaborating.

Southern University and A&M College in Louisiana require people on campus to shelter to deal with “potential threats to campus safety.”

According to a statement from the institution, the lockdown applies to “the entire Baton Rouge Land Islands”, including the Southern University Law Center, the Center for Agricultural Research and Extension and the University Laboratory School.

The afternoon lockdown was cancelled, but on weekends, all courses and campus events were cancelled.

Alabama State University was also under “terrorist threats” and closed its campus while law enforcement officers inspected the building, university officials told local media. The university sent a clear notice later that day, noting that “the immediate threat has been resolved” but told students to continue asylum in place.

Two hbcus in Virginia are also targeted.

Virginia State locked the lockdown, while local, state and federal law enforcement agencies investigated credibility threatened earlier in the day, according to a letter from the Virginia State University Office of Communications and University Relations. University officials assured students that “no injuries or incidents have been reportedly involved in the threat” and said meals will be offered in college housing during the lockdown.

Hampton University canceled all activities and classes Thursday and Friday to address potential threats. Students are not encouraged to move around campus unless absolutely necessary, and all non-essential staff are told to “evacuate immediately” in notices on the university website.

Florida’s White White – The threat from Cookman University also forces the university to cancel courses and lock down. The university’s notice tells students to go to their dormitories and faculty members leave campus.

Central Florida, which is mainly white institution, was threatened Thursday. “There is similar news at other universities across the country,” the UCF Police Department said Thursday afternoon. The police department added that it is working with the FBI to assess the threat, but does not consider it “credible.”
