While no two tour professionals are the same, nearly 80% take advantage of this trend with iron suits: they use multiple models.
The idea behind the combo suit is to make longer irons harder to hit and more forgiving while keeping shorter irons viable for better scoring opportunities.
Let’s browse the iron accessories brought by the fitters at the main club from True Spec Golf to see if the combination is right for you.
Where to create a combination set
We start the accessories by warming up with some wedges and short irons to get straight to your current 6 irons.
Why do you need six iron? Because this is usually a place where steel is concentrated, it is difficult for players to find consistency, and it may also be a discussion point for exploring the combination set. If we can install you in a consistent 6 iron rack setup, we believe the rest of the set will follow suit.

Some players won’t play up to 6 irons, maybe only 7 or 8, what about? If we find the 7 or 8 or longest iron you hit well in our extensive demo matrix, we believe they will work the same way.
The design of the club, especially the location of the gravity center, will affect the launch conditions, as well as the stability and forgiveness of the club. The lower the center of gravity, the easier the club will launch and are usually more forgiving.
For example, game improvements or post-cavity irons fall into this category. The higher the center of gravity, the easier it is for the player to control the flight and play left and right, but this also sacrifices forgiveness. These are muscle backs or blades designed for better ball shooters.

Depending on your goals, finding more distance or focusing only on tightening dispersion and consistency, your fitter will choose the iron style that best helps achieve these goals.
An important eligibility question to determine where the combo set might be: “Are you most willing to aim directly at the flag?” Most people might answer somewhere between 6, 7 or 8 irons. For example, if your answer to the question is 7 iron, then 7 irons downwards by PW or GW will have a more feasible style of iron, and will be more forgiving than anything 7.
Optimize the peak height of the entire set
Optimizing your peak height and drop angle is a key element in installing an iron, as we need to generate a steep enough drop to keep the ball green. If the ball isn’t steep enough, it’s hard to get the ball to stop where you want it. Between 40° and 45° drop angles, it is a good target for shooting.

When our drop angle is in the right window, this will indicate that you are in the proper start and dynamic rotation window. Emission and rotation usually have an inverse relationship. If the ball is fired high, there is no need for too much rotation to produce height and vice versa. If your launch is too high and your spin is too high, the ball may stir too high and sacrifice distance. The opposite is that the launch and rotation are too low to accommodate the green, and the worms will hide.
The amount of iron is an important factor in controlling emission and rotation. If it is difficult to reach the necessary peak height with lower longer irons, then a more forgiving, easier startup option may make sense at the top of the combo set.
It’s easier than ever for some club manufacturers to make combination kits. Ping is a great example because their i240, Blueprint S and Blueprint Tirons are three very different styles, but the loft configurations in each model are the same, so there is no need to adjust anywhere you decide to split the iron set.

Ping I240 Custom Iron
The Tour-inspired I240 advances our popular player technology, providing more forgiveness for control, look and feel that will appeal to all skill levels. This is Ping’s top launcher model, giving golfers more control and being able to sustain the batting distance and preventing the ball from getting closer to the hole. A new ABS badge in the true cavity fold design weighs 8.5 grams and is used in combination with an elastomeric insert that increases peripheral weighting, thereby increasing MOI in the middle and long iron. This helps reduce the dispersion by 11%. Badges and inserts contribute to a more ideal sound and get a softer, responsive feel from 431 stainless steel castings.

Some manufacturers need loft mixing. More tolerant and more viable iron from the same manufacturer can have different stock loft configurations and gaps. Typically, this requires bending the attic one or two degrees around the split to ensure the distances throughout the group are consistent.
How many iron rods do you need?
As for determining how many irons you should play with, do you need 3 poles, 4 or 5 irons? It may depend on your ability to hit the ball and just hit a longer iron.
If you don’t want to or are not confident, absolutely zero reasons you should be forced to play 4 or 5 or 6 irons. Depending on where each player feels comfortable, or how fast they swing or hit the ball, replacing long irons like hybrid or higher-spacious fairway forests with a more forgiving choice may be a better option. If you fall into this category, a set of irons may not be the best choice. In this case, all irons should be more forgiving, and hybrid or fairway Woods might be more suitable for you than longer iron.
