Cardinal Notes: Arenado, Donovan, Leahy

Nolan Arenado After six weeks of shoulder injury, he returned to the Cardinals’ lineup. Over the past two nights, he started at third base. He may be on the lineup for most or all 10 games of the season, but the real source of conspiracy will be back in the offseason.
Arenado signed for two seasons. Next year, he plans to pay 27mm. The Rockies are priced at $5mm, with another 6mm of delay. His salary dropped to 15mm in 2027, when ROX will eventually stand out in any part of the deal. St. Louis would love to give up the remaining two years and part of the 37mm. Arenado has a complete no trade clause, which is a lot of money for a player with a sharp drop in offense.
Queuing a trade is easier said than done. However, Arenado admitted yesterday that he had considered the possibility of this week’s Homestand could be his final at Busch Stadium (via Belleville News Democrats). The 34-year-old noted that the group “walks towards young players and lets them (play).” He said he expects the upcoming offseason to be similar in terms of trade rumors to last winter.
Arenado did not put his hands into practice, his no-trade clause plan. Last winter, he wanted to take more time to evaluate their direction Kyle Tucker. It is believed that when he gets better at understanding their competitive perspective, he only wants to go to the Yankees, the Red Sox, the Dodgers, Padres or the potential Astros.
The Yankees have never shown much interest and have acquired Arenado’s old teammates Ryan McMahon Fight three bases. The Dodgers and the Padres still have Max Munchy (via club options) and Manny MachadoAccording to the contract separately. Boston may lose Alex Bregman For free agents, but they will certainly work hard to re-sign with Arenado before considering a trade. The 10-time Golden Gloves champion is still a GP defender, but in nearly 400 trips, it hit .238/.296/.370. It was his worst offensive work in 162 seasons since he was a rookie.
If you shop in St. Louis, you won’t find any problems Brendan Donovan. Left-handed batsman can also control two seasons. He is in arbitration and will raise the salary this year on his 2.85mm salary. He will probably make about 15mm over the next two seasons. For a Gold Glove utility player, this is much lower than the market value, he took the .283/.351/.409 line in the plate on 492 trips.
The Cardinal never seems to be close to a deal involving Donovan on the transaction deadline. Despite reports on the Yankees, Astros and Dodgers’ interests (certainly). Ken Rosenthal of Track and Field has floated the possibility of Donovan becoming an offseason trade candidate. Chaim Bloom will take over John Mozeliak’s baseball action at the start of the offseason. He may not tear things all the way, but there is a more serious attempt to move things like Donovan and Lars Nootbaar.
This is especially true if ownership is unwilling to be used for large-scale rotational upgrades. They have a potentially competitive lineup. There is still a lot of work to be done in pitching. Matthew Liberatore Lead the spin with an average running rate of 4.30. Sonny Gray Still have peripherals that are far better than his 4.43 points, but he is the only starter they reliably missed the Bats.
Liberto’s figures have dropped in the second half of the year. Michael McGreevy With 4.44 ERA, the strikeout efficiency was 14.2% in 79 innings. Miles Mikolas Nearly 5 runs are allowed every 9 times; they may let him walk into free agents. Earth Expert Andre Pallante There was a bad situation in the second half and you should probably feel at ease.
The organization’s most talented minor league weapon has gone back this season. Quinn Mathews You can take a look next year, but need a better command than he showed in Triple-A. Tekoah Roby and Sem Robberse Everyone underwent surgery by Tommy John. therefore It has not been proven that he can stay healthy. Fifth ranking Liam Doyle Now is the organization’s clear pitching prospect, but it may not enter the MLB radar as early as mid-next season.
The Cardinal couldn’t have won four starting pitchers throughout the winter. They need some internal weapons to strengthen. An external candidate may be Kyle Leahy. The 28-year-old has been a full-time reliefist in parts of three MLB seasons. Leahy showed a breakthrough year in his work in multiple innings, throwing 81 frames of 3.33 ERA balls in 58 games. One of Oli Marmol’s most trusted weapons in the second half, he has played a handful of 2-3 innings.
Athletic Katie Woo wrote that the Cardinals were so impressed by Leahy that they might see him as a rotation option for next season. The 6’4-inch right was the starter in his underage league career, but he held that position in Double-A. He has been a reliefist since the end of the 2022 season.
Leahy is still using the six-formula mixture and has above-average controls. He performed better with right-handed batsman, but the damage was quite limited (.262/.349/.385) against left-handed. It is not a problem for him to be a back-end starter to succeed. Whether the Cardinal needs to weigh the benefits of giving him this opportunity is worth taking one of the better pieces from an inexperienced bullpen Ryan Helsley,,,,, Phil Marton and Steven Matz Start from the picture.
