The first five minutes of class can set the tone for the entire course. So, what can you do to attract students’ attention and be ready to learn immediately? Creative and critical thinking issues
Start students’ creativity and critical thinking and prompt them to use from out of the box. For example, have students reflect on provocative quotes, ask them to brainstorm problems, prompt them to invent new technologies, or ask them what you would rather question. Help students prepare for their study to learn by assigning daily check-in or SEL activities as morning work or bells. You can even make them part of a high school day.
While waiting for the course to begin, prepare these questions for students to answer:
- What is unique about making you happy?
- What is the best tool for you in a calm corner?
- What have you done in the past 24 hours?
- What can distract your class today?
- Describe the last time you made new friends.
- What is the difference between anger and frustration?
- If you can, assign the color of each feeling and describe the reasons why they are together: happiness, sadness, madness, inwardness, love.
