Ryder Cup: Donald says fans can open paid American stars

Luke Donald claims that American fans at Bethpage Black can open up American players because they get paid.
When asked if the atmosphere in Farmingdale, New York would turn sour, Donald told the British media: “This could happen,” he said. “We all know how high tickets are, and it would be an expensive trip for a family of four. If American players get stipends or any allowances and don’t perform, they don’t perform, then New Yorkers can make them know that.”
Team USA players and captains will receive $500,000 each this week – $300,000 of which must be donated to charities, while European teams will not receive personal financial rewards.
“When I first heard about it last year, I wanted to be ahead of it, and it looked like it might happen,” Donald said. “I came into contact with all 12 people from Rome to see how they felt. Their voices were important. Everyone liked it: ‘We didn’t even consider hanging out for this event.’

“We just don’t see that. We understand what it represents. We have a great goal, which is really enough for us. We understand the funds raised to help European tourism groups and grassroots.
“We talk a lot about it and we’re here to inspire the next generation. So that money will be a good thing. Hopefully it will help future Ryder Cup players become great players. I think our purpose, why we play Ryder Cup, is very strong, this week is enough.
“It shows what the Ryder Cup means to these guys. These guys don’t have much money on these guys in a grand scheme of things. They’re the best weeks in the Ryder Cup. There’s a lot more for them. We certainly don’t need any motivation or monetary rewards to get us up.”
The Ryder Cup begins on Friday.
