The beach becomes the battle zone for Nicolas Cage’s perfect new thriller

The best way to watch a movie is blind, and that’s exactly how I approach Nicolas Cage Surfers When it finally hit Hulu. I know it premiered in Cannes in 2024, but I missed the limited drama playback from earlier this year.
Entering my first watch, all I have is the two sentences from IMDB: “A man returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood and surfs with his son. When he is humiliated by a group of locals, the man is drawn into a conflict that keeps him rising and pushes him to his breakthrough point.”
I look forward to a movie where the father and son move to Luna Bay, Australia and be stalked by hostile neighbors or plagued by family invasion plots. instead, Surfers The turn is more inner and satisfied than I thought.
The entire movie takes place in the parking lot
Surfers A deceptive and simple setting full of emotional weight. Cage’s character, known only as “surfers”, brought a lot of luggage. He was desperate to raise $1.7 million in compensation to recover his childhood home overlooking Luna Bay, where he once surfed with his late father.
Recently separated from his wife, he brought his son (Finn Little, known as the “child”) to the beach until he fell into hostility in the first place. Led by Peteble (Alexander Bertrand), locals show that despite his history, he does not belong to Luna Bay.
Long after his son returned to his mother, the surfer decided to secure the house and relive his past. From there, things spiral. He was harassed, robbed, beaten, ridiculed by the police and kept being told to leave. As hours of blur together, his Lexus disappeared from sight, replaced by local vagabonds (nic Cassim) belonging to local vagabonds.
Surfers’ grip on reality weakens sunburn, dehydrate and increasingly disorientated. He wandered around the parking lot, roaring in contact with the mortgage broker, and he began to reflect the wanderers he had encountered before. The question becomes clear: how long has he been exposed in this wasteland?
Never looked
Surfers It’s a psychological thriller. This means, yes, we deal with unreliable protagonists to a certain extent. But, more happening under the surface, I won’t spoil the reveals in Acts 2 and 3.
If you follow the breadcrumbs, but don’t expect a neat answer. Obviously, surfers are suffering from a mental health crisis, but not in a formulaic way.
Streaming surfers
Is the surfer really just a wanderer who cleans up the trash through the trash while sticking to a fantasy life that never existed? Has he been trapped in this parking lot for months, and locals always see him as an unnecessary nuisance? Or is he a popular figure in Lexus driving, with real money and bad timing desperate to take back his dream home?
When our protagonist endures physical and psychological torture, Surfers Blur these questions until everything is typed in place. You will find tips along the way, but once you see how the parts come together, you can get the most out of your gain. To be sure: Nicolas Cage brings himself into the role, and the emotional gradual twists he offers make the whole decline worth it.
