Certified fresh crime satire that’s sexy, self-aware and violent

What do you get when you combine the sharp, terse dialogue of a Tarantino movie with the self-awareness of a popcorn movie? the last action hero? There is only one correct answer: 2012 seven psychopaths.

The film, written and directed by Martin McDonagh, gleefully rips apart the art of storytelling with an in-film set-up that all of its protagonists seem oddly aware of. The result is a meta-commentary on filmmaking, creativity, and how unhinged imagination can still be rewarded, even if you have severe alcohol dependence and… er, writer’s block.

Billy is a struggling actor who and his criminal partner Hans (Christopher Walken) make money by kidnapping dogs and returning them for reward cash.

Billy becomes frustrated because he keeps telling Marty wonderful psychotic stories to write the script for, only for Marty to forget them after a night of drunkenness. When he recalled them later, he swore they had appeared in a dream, which drove Billy crazy.

Meanwhile, crime boss Charlie Costello (Woody Harrelson) loses his beloved dog. Billy, who happens to be sleeping with Charlie’s girlfriend Angela (Olga Kurylenko), is the mastermind behind the theft and hopes to get a huge reward once the dog is returned safely.

But as Charlie hunts down the culprit, the mysterious “Jack of Diamonds Killer” is on a rampage targeting criminals like him. Scenes are played out, rewritten and replayed in real time by our characters, reflecting the creative process in a way that is both real and surreal. For anyone who has ever tried to write a novel, this is a painfully accurate portrait of chasing inspiration and struggling with structure. By turning this process into narrative itself, Macdonald writes a love letter to writers who can’t quite express themselves but refuse to give up.
