Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard earned his first win over Lorenzo Musetti at his fifth attempt on Friday, beating the top-seeded Italian 6-4, 7-6(8) at the Fortis European Open in Brussels.
The Frenchman enters the quarterfinals with a 0-4 Lexus ATP head-to-head record against Musetti, which includes two losses at this year’s U.S. Open and last month in Beijing. But Mpetshi Perricard showed no mercy, trailing by just six points after his first serve (43/49) and often moving forward to impose his will on Turin hopeful Musetti, according to Infosys ATP Statistics.
“I’m very proud. My record against him is not very good,” said Mpehi Perikad, who saved two set points in the second-set tiebreaker. “I walked on the court and said, ‘I need to try something else,’ and it worked. It was a close win. I was up two match points and then saved a set point. I’m very proud of myself.”
Mpetshi Perricard’s two career top-10 wins both come this month. He defeated world No. 4 Taylor Fritz in Shanghai and maintained that form, reaching his third tour-level semifinal this season. He will next face third seed Jiri Lehka in the semi-finals.
Mpetshi Perricard has a 4-0 record against top-20 players on indoor hard courts and can improve on that record against world No. 17 Lehecka on Saturday. The Czech led Benjamin Bonzi 6-7(8), 6-1, 4-1, but the Frenchman withdrew due to a left leg injury.
Elsewhere, Felix Auger-Aliassim overtook Jack Draper to finish ninth, beating Eliot Spizzirri 6-2, 7-6(6) in Turin. The 25-year-old defeated the tenacious Spitzri, who held on to three set points in the second set. But Auger-Aliassime kept his composure and raised his game in a thrilling, chaotic tie-break to advance.
“This is a sport that can turn things around quickly,” Auger-Aliassime said of leading 4-2 in the second set. “Every opponent in the draw is difficult. You wake up every day hoping that this is going to be your day and that no matter who you play, you prepare yourself to the best of your ability.
“For a set and a half, it’s hard to ask for better. Then I made one or two mistakes, but I have to give him a lot of credit. He raised his level, he played very well and it was a battle until the end.”
The Canadian is the second player to reach the semifinals nine times this season, joining world number one Carlos Alcaraz (11 times). Auger-Aliassime is the fourth player to reach 30 wins on hard courts this season, including titles in Adelaide and Montpellier. He leads the ATP Tour in indoor wins this decade (74).
The Montreal native is targeting a second appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals, having previously competed in the 2022 year-end event. At the PIF ATP Live Event in Turin, Musetti, who is ranked eighth, currently leads Auger-Aliassime by 480 points, who can close the gap to 330 points through the championship.
Home hopeful and wild card player Raphael Collignon ended the day with a 7-6(5), 6-1 victory over fourth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Collignon reached his first tour-level semi-final and secured a career-high in Monday’s PIF ATP Rankings with a 3-0 win over a top-20 player.
