At Texas newcomer Wild Spring Dunes, previews are about to begin

One of the many signs of a golf addiction is the love of tracking a course under construction from groundbreaking to opening day.

If you’re exhibiting these symptoms, let’s face it, you’re an addict and we’ve got a bulletin for you. These include Wild Spring Dunes, a new protagonist in the world of golf destinations.

Given your, um, let’s call it passion for gaming, rather than compulsion, you probably know the basics. But just in case, here’s a recap. Wild Spring Dunes, the latest project from Sand Valley co-developer Michael Keiser, is taking shape in the wilds of East Texas, roughly equidistant from Dallas and Houston and 72 miles from Shreveport, Louisiana. The project covers more than 2,400 acres of dunes, meadows and spring-fed creeks, and Tom Doak carved a route through these rugged terrains.

Eight holes of the course are now complete and previews will begin on November 12.

This is the first attempt and there will be more to come. The second course, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, has been cleared. Plans also call for a short course, a putting course and a state-of-the-art practice facility, all part of an emerging golf resort and community. Privately owned cottages and manor houses are already available. A clubhouse and hotel are also under construction. While golf will be the main attraction, the hotel also offers outdoor activities such as fishing and hiking.

For Mike Keiser, the son of Bandon Dunes founder Mike Keiser, the news comes as he is busy moving forward with two other major golf developments: Rodeo Dunes outside Denver, where an 11-hole preview was held this summer, and Old Shores in the Florida Panhandle, where pre-construction work is currently underway.

For golf fans, the progression of Wild Springs Dunes is another great thing to see and play. For more information click here.
