Novak Djokovic notched his 200th career indoor victory at the Wanda Pharma Greek Championship on Thursday, beating Nuno Borges 7-6(1), 6-4 to reach the Athens semifinals.
The Serbian missed three break point opportunities in the first set but raised his game in the crucial moments to dominate the tie-break. With the game leading 6-1, he ran to five chanting fans on the sidelines, inspiring the crowd before ending the game and taking the lead.
The former PIF ATP No. 1 carried that momentum into the second set, producing a composed performance to seal victory in one hour and 44 minutes in the pair’s first Lexus ATP head-to-head matchup.
“It was a very physical fight. I thought Nuno played at a high level,” Djokovic said. “I was a little surprised by his performance. I thought we were going toe-to-toe for most of the game. Only a few points decided the winner tonight and his performance deserves a round of applause.”
“I played really well in the first set tiebreaker. Neither of us had much chance to break the other’s serve. That was the only game I was able to break him.”
Djokovic is chasing his 101st tour-level title this week, having won in Geneva earlier this year to become just the third man to win 100 trophies. Jimmy Connors leads the list with 109 crowns, and Roger Federer is second with 103 crowns.
Djokovic defeated Alejandro Tabilo in his first match in Athens, his first victory against the Chilean in his third attempt. The 38-year-old Serbian has been rock solid in his first two matches and is in good form ahead of the Nitto ATP Finals, which begins on Sunday.
Record seven-time year-end champion Djokovic is placed in the Jimmy Connors group along with Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz and Alex De Minaur.
For now, his focus will remain on the ATP 250 event in Athens, where he will face Marcos Giron or Yannick Hanfmann in his 199th tour-level semifinal on Friday. According to ATP Infosys statistics, Djokovic is now 29-0 after winning the first set in 2025.
