Are you in the mood to watch a movie that will make you laugh and cry often? my old ass (2024) is a psychedelic coming-of-age story starring Hollywood’s favorite girl-next-door Aubrey Plaza in what may be her greatest performance (if you’re familiar with her oeuvre, that is a lot of). If you’re ready for the best travel you can enjoy without leaving your couch, you can now watch this modern classic on Prime Video.

She just tripped and fell, boo

The premise is my old ass A teenage girl is preparing to start a new life in college while drinking mushroom tea with her closest friends. She hallucinates and sees an older version of herself, who makes surprising suggestions to avoid a boy named Chad, and even has her number programmed into her younger self’s phone, with the contextual name “My Old Ass.” Of course, Chad walks into her life and our young protagonist must decide whether to accept the wisdom of her past life or trust her feelings and live in the present.

Cast my old ass It was small, with mostly young stars, including lead actress Macy Stella (best known outside of this film for nashville TV show) stars a young girl whose older self is a walking, talking cautionary tale. Maddie Zeigler (best known as music) plays her friend who provides the “mushrooms” that lead to the protagonist’s life-changing encounter with her older self. Percy Hynes White (best known outside of this film as Wednesday Meanwhile, the TV series) plays an attractive boy whose future self tries to warn her away from him.

Rolling Mushrooms with America’s Girl Next Door

However, it is no surprise that this powerful actor my old ass is Aubrey Plaza (best known as Safety not guaranteed), she injects her unique dry humor into the older version of the protagonist. I’m not surprised that Plaza has a knack for causing trouble; after all, much of her character’s wacky humor matches the quips of her character April Ludgate in “April Ludgate.” parks and recreation. But Plaza does the film’s dramatic elements surprisingly well, as she fully embraces a bittersweet reality that everyone eventually asks themselves: “What advice would you give to your younger self, if you could?”

Fortunately, my old ass It ended up being one of the most popular comedies of the modern era. The film has a score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising the film for its blend of off-kilter humor and surprisingly serious drama. They also praised Aubrey Plaza’s older version of the title character, who blends a millennial sense of humor with the world-weary wisdom that comes with age.

Hollywood’s next big director has arrived

interestingly, my old ass Ultimately impressing Chris Columbus, the veteran director has given us films such as home alone and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. He called the quirky comedy one of his favorite movies of 2024, singling out writer-director Megan Park as having “extraordinary promise” and being “an important part of our cinematic future.” He compared her to superstar directors like Ryan Coogler and Robert Eggers and considered her one of Hollywood’s most promising creative talents.

Personally, I was as blown away as Columbus was by Parker’s film: like many people, what I most wanted to see was my old ass Because Aubrey Plaza is one of Hollywood’s most dependable funny actors. Plus, I love science fiction, so what better movie than a movie with America’s favorite girl next door breaking through time and space to teach her younger self a lesson? Going in, what I was really expecting was a light-hearted comedy about generational differences and the funny pain of getting older.

A funny movie with a serious message

although my old ass Delivering all the comedy I wanted and more, what made me really fall in love with this movie was how deeply thoughtful it was about what it means to be truly alive. Plaza’s character wants to spare her younger self the pain of growing old, but she’s wise enough in her youth to realize that it’s the trauma of today that shapes the people we’re destined to become. Life is about taking risks, and this movie brilliantly demonstrates that a life without risks is no life at all.

do you agree my old ass Is it one of the most innovative coming-of-age comedies ever made, or is it something you would tell your younger self to avoid making the mistake of watching this movie in the first place? The only way to find out is to pick up the remote (“shrooms” optional) and watch this hilarious and heartwarming movie for yourself on Prime Video. Come watch this cheesy comedy, stay for its surprisingly sweet message about love, life, and the role pain plays in helping you experience pure, unadulterated joy.
