Off-duty LAPD officer killed in Santa Clarita crash

An off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer was killed in a crash early Saturday morning, authorities said. He was the only person involved in the accident.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department received a call about a vehicle fire at 2:15 a.m. and arrived at the scene of the accident at 2:22 a.m. at Cinema Drive and Bouquet Canyon Road in Santa Clarita, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

An on-duty deputy with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said when the fire department arrived, the driver hit a light pole and the vehicle was engulfed in flames. The cause of the crash is unknown.

Firefighters did not request an ambulance and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was investigating the scene of an accident early Saturday morning when a motorist drove through a crime scene and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to a Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

It’s unclear when the arrest took place or any other details about the driver.

A fire department spokesman confirmed the victim was an off-duty police officer. His name was not immediately released.
