Southern California home explosion injures 8

An explosion at a Chino Hills home Sunday afternoon injured eight people and forced a temporary evacuation, according to the Chino Valley Fire Protection District.

Fire officials said crews responded to an explosion in the 4200 block of Sierra Vista Drive at 3:44 p.m. One house appeared to have collapsed and some neighboring homes also suffered minor damage.

Sixteen people were temporarily evacuated, fire officials said. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

Four of the injured were taken to a nearby hospital and four others arrived on their own, officials said.

Video from the scene showed some buildings near the house still burning as night fell on Sunday.

Chino Valley Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Jon Cripe told newsgathering service OnScene.TV that Southern California Gas was working to mitigate a gas leak at the home following the explosion. He said the eight injured were inside the house that exploded.
