Sudden cancellation after 24 years stargate universeThe beloved sci-fi franchise is about to return, thanks to Amazon. The giant company acquired the entire franchise when it acquired MGM in 2022, and since then there have been rumors of new series coming to Amazon Prime Video. Today, the news was confirmed that Stargate will return as a streaming series and was touted as a new entry in the series, with new showrunner Martin Gero bluntly saying, “This is not a reboot.” Long-suffering fans have been waiting for more from the hit series for decades, and the rest of today’s news proves that the wait has been worth it.
Original Stargate creative team returns
First up, Martin Groh is the new showrunner. Gero begins to make a name for himself in Hollywood stargate atlantis and went on to write episodes for every installment of the series, direct the Atlantis episode “Inside Out,” and even served as a creative consultant on the second half Stargate SG-1. If anyone is going to bring back the series, it should be the person who helped revive it in the first place, which is why it’s especially impressive that Gero isn’t the only one returning to Stargate Command.

If anyone can get Stargate’s unique tone right, it’s these three.
Even so, they are not alone. Brad Wright, co-creator of the Stargate TV universe who serves as a consultant, explained during Amazon’s event that his goal is to do something they couldn’t do in 1997. He echoed Groh’s enthusiastic statement that the new show won’t rely on accumulated lore from 350 episodes, but can be enjoyed fresh, and then he hopes everyone will want to go back and watch the series from the beginning.
The possibilities are endless
Not much is known about Amazon’s new Stargate series beyond the creative team. Will it provide closure for the Destiny crew? stargate universe? Are we going back to Atlantis and ghosts? Will we see Stargate Command officials again? Will we meet General Samantha Carter after all these years? Most importantly, will every planet be like Vancouver?
Considering how each show ended, there’s a lot to be explored in the new series, even if it will be an entry point for newcomers. There’s a lot of speculation among Stargate fans, as the new series is still in the early stages of development and doesn’t yet have a release date.
