Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martinez led Spain into the title race in Saturday’s Davis Cup final, beating Germany’s Kevin Kravitz and Tim Puitz 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in doubles.

Earlier, Alexander Zverev had equalized for Germany with a 7-6(2) 7-6(5) victory over Jaume Munnar in Bologna, while Pablo Carreno Busta had given Spain the lead with a 6-4 7-6(6) victory over Jan-Leonard Straf.

With the doubles match left to determine the outcome of the semifinals, Granollers and Martinez stepped up to help the Spanish team advance. In the third set, they crucially saved a break point in the service game at 5-3, 30/40, and won the first match point, triggering a jubilant celebration from the Spanish team.

In the first match of the day, Carreno Busta saved five consecutive set points in the second set against Struff and fought back from 1/6 down in the tie-break to give his country the lead after 1 hour and 46 minutes.

everything adds up

Zverev, ranked third in the PIF ATP rankings, hit 32 winners, including 13 aces, to surpass Munnar, but in the end his victory was in vain. Zverev ended his season with a 57-25 record, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.

Spain has reached the Davis Cup final for the first time since lifting the Davis Cup trophy in 2019. The former champion will face two-time defending champions Italy in Sunday’s final.
