Rob Reiner’s friends Larry David, Martin Short and Billy Crystal speak out

A group of Rob Reiner’s closest friends issued a joint statement Tuesday praising the legendary film director for his masterful storytelling and remembering him as a “passionate, courageous citizen” who did his best to make the world a better place.

“His comedic style was unparalleled, his love of dialogue music was spot-on, and his sharpening of dramatic edges was simply elegant,” the statement read. “To actors, he loved them. To writers, he made them better.”

Signatories include: Billy and Janice Crystal, Albert and Kimberly Brooks, Martin Short, Alan and Robin Zweibel, Larry David and Ashley Underwood, Marc Scheiman and Lou Mirabal, Barry and Diana Levinson, James Costos and Michael Smith.

Friends wrote that in addition to being a great comedian, Renner also had unparalleled talents as a director.

“From comedy to drama, from ‘documentary’ to documentary, he’s always on top,” they said. “He mesmerized audiences. They trusted him. They lined up to see his movies.”

Many of these friends worked closely with Reiner on film and television projects and said he was a true collaborator. Renner directed the 1989 film “When Harry Met Sally…” starring Billy Crystal, as well as the 2023 documentary about Brooks “Albert Brooks: Defending My Life.” He had a recurring role on Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Family friends told The Times that Crystal was one of the first people contacted by the family after Rob and his wife, Michelle Singer-Reiner, were found stabbed to death in their home on Sunday afternoon. He visited his home that afternoon and left in tears.

“If you had an idea, he would listen and he would bring you into the process,” the friends said. “As a filmmaker, it was an honor to be in his hands.”

They praised Lehner and his wife for their political activism and dedication to helping others.

“Michelle Reiner and Rob Reiner were strong and determined and dedicated so much of their lives to improving the lives of our fellow citizens,” the statement read. “Together they were a special force – dynamic, selfless and inspiring.”

The statement ended with a quote from “It’s a Wonderful Life,” one of Reiner’s favorite movies: “Every man’s life affects the lives of many others, and when he’s not around, he leaves a terrible hole, doesn’t he?”

“You have no idea,” friends wrote.
