Janel Parrish Diagnosed with Endometriosis, Recovers from Surgery

pretty Little Liars Star Janelle Parrish is opening up about her recent endometriosis diagnosis and subsequent surgery — and for good reason.

Parrish, 37, wrote on Instagram on Friday, December 19: “I want to continue spreading awareness of #endometriosis, so here we are. I wanted to share my story in the hope it helps others dealing with this very painful and isolating disease. I am currently recovering from my second surgery, but this was the first to remove it. It took 5 hours under the knife and the surgery was a success!”

Endometriosis is a chronic and often painful disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, according to the Mayo Clinic. In some cases, tissue was found in the lungs and shoulders.

Excision surgery is a surgical procedure in which doctors use minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy to remove endometriosis in the hope of relieving the painful symptoms of endometriosis, including debilitating cramping, nausea, vomiting and more.
