Jesse Nelson splits from fiancé over baby muscle disease: report

In early January, Nelson revealed the heartbreaking news that her daughters had been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy type 1 (SMA), a genetic disorder that causes muscle weakness.

“A few months ago, my mom noticed that the girls’ legs weren’t showing as much movement as they should,” Nelson shared in a Jan. 4 Instagram video. “[It] I wasn’t really worried at the time because from the moment I left the NICU I was told, ‘Your baby is premature, so don’t compare your baby to other babies.’ They won’t reach the same milestones. Just take them as they are. ‘”

“When healthcare visits come, we’re told, ‘They look great, they’re healthy, everything is fine,'” the singer shared. “Then there started to be signs that they were having trouble eating normally. They were eating less and less.”

“Type 1 is the most severe type a baby can have. It stands for spinal muscular atrophy and affects every muscle in the body, including the legs, arms, breathing, swallowing… Over time, it kills the muscles in the body,” she explained. “If it is not treated in time, the baby will not live longer than 2 years old.”

Storey and Ocean quickly received treatment for SMA Type 1, Nelson said, and the two little guys have now completed treatment.
