The U.S. Department of Justice said former leaders of the Mexican violent Zetas cartel were charged in the United States on Friday, including drug trafficking, gun ownership and money laundering.

The Justice Department said Miguel Trevino Morales led Zetas until Mexican authorities arrested him in 2013, when his brother Omar took over until his arrest in 2015.
It added: “After his arrest, the defendant allegedly renamed Los Zetas to Cartel del Norrest (CDN) and continued to control the cartel while he was imprisoned in Mexico.”
The State Department said last month that it has designated CDN as a “foreign terrorist organization.”
Washington accused the two brothers of being “personal responsibility” to commit dozens of murders and direct killings, kidnappings and torture.
Both of them pleaded not guilty on Friday and faced the possibility of death if convicted, reporters at the hearing said.
“As the alleged, the defendants represent some of the world’s most vicious cartel leaders, responsible for the terror reign of Los Zetas, weirdly impunitive and ruthlessness, ignoring anything beyond their wealth, power and control,” said New York, agent for Ice of Michael Alfonso, Alfonso, of New York.
Other suspects deported to the United States last month are Rafael Caro Quinterowho was wanted for the infamous American DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena 1985.
