Telegram founder Durov allowed temporary departure from France: Source

Sources told AFP that Telegram founder Pavel Durov was allowed to leave France temporarily, where he was charged with multiple violations related to the alleged realization of organized crime.

A source familiar with the case told AFP: “He left France this morning.

According to another source, an investigative judge has authorized him to leave France for “a few weeks.”

The third source said Durov had gone to Dubai.

A telegraph spokesman declined to comment when AFP reached it, saying the company later issued a statement.

Sources close to the case said the investigative judge accepted Durov’s request to amend his supervisory status a few days ago.

Durov, 40, was sensational in August 2024 at Le Bourget Airport outside Paris and was charged with a series of violations related to the popular messaging app he established. He was banned from leaving the country.

After several days of inquiry, he was charged with several counts of failing to curb extremist and terrorist content and was released on bail of 5 million euros ($5.6 million).

Durov, who holds a passport from Russia, France and the United Arab Emirates, initially criticized his arrest, but has since announced measures that appear to succumb to Paris’ demands.

Sources said that in January, the founder of the Telegraph told the French magistrate’s investigation that he “recognized the seriousness of all the charges”.
