Thousands of people in Mexico have brought street vigils to many missing people in the country nationwide.

Demonstrators from cities across the country laid 400 pairs of shoes and 400 candles on the ground. This refers to the potential victims of hundreds of shoes and clothes recently discovered that are believed to belong to drug cartels on ranches in the country’s western region.

Poster reading slogans including “Mexico is a massive grave” and “We need answers.”

In Mexico City, the rally took place in front of the National Palace, which is the official residence of President Claudia Sheinbaum.

According to local broadcasters, vigils are also held in the cities of Guadalajara, Puebla, Veracruz, Cancun and Colima.

In the country, more than 124,000 people have been officially listed as missing.

In early March, a group of missing relatives found numerous fragments of shoes, clothes and bones at the Izaguirre ranch in the city of Teuchitlán in western Hallico.

The group said it believed the clothes and bodies belonged to the missing persons, the ranch was used as an operation center by drug cartels, and the kidnapped people were forcibly recruited and killed.

The discovery of burning human remains was formally confirmed. After the discovery, Sheinbaum ordered an investigation because the ranch had been searched and confiscated by police in September, but no evidence was collected.
