Red Sox Notes: Newcomb, Hamilton, Campbell

The Red Sox have some open spin opportunities, and a surprising name is becoming a candidate. manager ÁlexCora Tell Masslive’s Christopher Smith Sean Newcomb It is the start of the season “In Hunting”.
Since the self-operated site opened, Sox has lost three spin options. Each Kutter Crawford,,,,, Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito Plans to start the season on the injured roster. Crawford had right knee aches, Bello’s right shoulder aches and Giolito’s left hamstring tight. That socks were left for Garrett Crochet,,,,, Tanner Houck and Walker Buehler In three positions, but there are two vacancies this season. They can go with men already on the roster, e.g. Quinn Priester,,,,, Richard Fitts or Cooper Chriswellbut it seems they have a chance with Newcomb, who serves as a non-member inviter at the camp.
Newcomb was once a viable major league starter on June 32. He threw 264 innings for Atlanta in 2017 and 2018, starting 49 of his 50 innings. At that time, his average running volume was 4.06. His 12% walk rate is altitude, but he scored 23.3% of his opponent with a 43.6% cut and got the ground.
Since then, his results have been backed up. His control problems worsened, which prompted him to spend more time in the bullpen, but without improvement. From 2019 to now, he has 167 major league innings, pitching at a 5.23 ERA and a 13% walk rate. But so far, he has thrown 9 2/3 innings with 0.93 ERA, 27% strikeout rate and 8.1% walk rate. This led to him reaching a minor league agreement with Boston this winter.
There is no real urgency to choose Newcomb’s contract, Smith said the lefty didn’t exit in his minor league deal. But everyone at Crawford, Bello and Cholito can come back fairly early this season, so as the season progresses, Sox may need him now more than they do.
Still, if Sox starts the year with someone like Priester or Fitts, Massachusetts natives might end up going to Triple-A Worcester, but he’s happy with that. “If that means going there and getting ready, that’s great,” he told Smith. “It’s on a massive scale. So either way, I can go home. It’s a plus. But obviously the goal is to get there.”
Sox also has to make a decision on the second base because they don’t have a defined starter there. Cora’s Per Jen McCaffrey said that’s David Hamilton,,,,, Vaughn Grissom and Christian CampbellCora spoke affectionately about Hamilton and his athleticism. Hamilton has hit only .235/.298/.373 in his career so far, but has 35 steals in 40 attempts.
Campbell is one of the most important prospects in the league. He was only 22 years old and in June 23, with only 19 three games. Cracking the major leagues is certainly feasible, but sending him back to Worcester for more representatives is also reasonable. Today, he entered in the spring with .152/.263/.182, which is not entirely a kick. He did take a 1-3 walk today, but he also eliminated twice.
Smith wrote about the performance today, noting that Campbell made several impressive defensive games. It was a problem before, and so far this spring, few balls hit him, making it difficult for policy makers to evaluate his gloves. “It feels so comfortable. Cora said of Campbell’s performance today. “That’s good. But I think defensive, today is the first day I was able to see it. We talk about it, too. (He) had several chances. Even later in the game, it’s 12-3 or something. He did two good shows. This tells you who he is and he is the defender. ”
SOX will play against Arlington’s Rangers next Thursday. This gave them about a week to make the final lineup decision. Neither Newcomb nor Campbell are in the 40-man roster, so a corresponding move will be required if the layoffs are made.
