Pakistan plans to target Afghan militants as attacks surge

Pakistan plans to target Afghanistan hiding places for radicals allegedly a deadly surge in cross-border violence, officials said Wednesday.

“We will bring the war to the doorsteps of people who are violent in Pakistan,” an intelligence official told the DPA after Tuesday’s marathon security meeting.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was held against the backdrop of attacks by members of the Pakistani Taliban, allegedly from Afghanistan’s security paradise.

Since 2014, the group has been weakened by the Pakistani military in a series of offensives. They have been looking for a comeback since their counterpart took over Afghanistan three years ago.

Another official also said: “We will use drones, fighters and other resources we have.”

Pakistan occasionally launched air strikes in Afghanistan, bombing the hiding places of so-called militants, a move that strained relations between Islamabad and Kabul.

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khwaja Asif said Islamabad asked Afghan Taliban rulers to take action against Pakistani militants, but they never complied.

Pakistan also intends to target combatants from a separatist group in Afghanistan, which was recently killed in the wake of the hijacking of train hijacking in the southwestern province of Pabulokistan, two officials said.
