EU car registration drops 3% in February 2025 YTD

New car registrations for the EU (EU) fell 3% in February 2025, year-to-date (YTD) compared with the same period in 2024.

EU registrations fell by 3.4%.

Reduced registrations were observed in several group major markets, including Italy, Germany and France, while increased in Spain.

New car registrations in Italy fell 6%, while records in Germany and France fell 4.6% and 3.3% respectively. By comparison, Spain increased by 8.4%.

Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) account for 15.2% of the EU’s total market share, up from 11.5% in the same period in 2024.

Hybrid Vehicles (HEVS) captures 35.2% of the market and maintains its position as the preferred choice for EU consumers.

The total market share of gasoline and diesel vehicles fell to 38.8%, down from 48.5% in the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, new BEV sales rose 28.4% to 255,489 units.

Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands accounted for double-digit growth, with Germany at 41%, Belgium at 38%, and the Netherlands at 25%.

However, BEV registrations in France fell slightly by 1.3%.

In February 2025, hybrid vehicle registrations, driven by growth in France, Spain, Italy and Germany, grew 18.7%.

France led the way with a growth of 51.4%, followed by Spain 31.5%, Italy 10.4%, and Germany 9.8%, resulting in 594,059 units registered.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle registrations fell 5% from January to February 2025, down 65.3% from Belgium and 49.3% from France.

As a result, the plug-in mixture now accounts for 7.4% of the total EU car registration volume.

In February 2025, the difference in battery-electric cars was 23.7%, while hybrid electric cars rose 19%.

By February 2025, petrol car registration rate fell by 20.5%, with France having the highest decline at 27.5%. Germany, Italy and Spain also saw some declines.

The market share of gasoline fell to 29.1%, down from 35.5% last year. Diesel vehicle registrations fell 28%, resulting in a 9.7% market share.

The difference in February 2025 showed that gasoline fell by 22.4% and diesel fell by 28.8%. In January, new car registrations in the EU fell by 2.6% compared to the same period last year.
