Polish president signs new law restricting asylum

Warsaw, Poland (AP) – Polish President Andrzej Duda signed a new law on Wednesday that restricts people from demanding asylum when Poland strengthens its border with Belarus due to its depiction as a hybrid war strategy.
“I think it is necessary to strengthen the security of our borders and the safety of the Poles,” Duda said in announcing that he signed the bill after the passage of the lawmakers.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk called on Duda to sign the legislation. Duda has expressed concern in the past that it could make it harder for dissidents in the despotic Berarus to escape the repressive regime there.
The new legislation introduces temporary restrictions on illegal submission of international protection applications to NATO and EU member states.
Human rights activists criticized the bill.
