CATL, Sinopec in battery swap partnership

China’s largest electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer, Contemporary Ampere Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), announced this week that it has agreed to an earlier framework agreement with China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) to establish a nationwide battery-switching network.

CATL and Sinopec have collaborated in many areas, including the development of integrated energy stations, energy storage systems (ESS), energy products, and new materials and technologies. The two companies now agree to extend the collaboration to the battery swap division.

CATL and Sinopec have agreed to jointly build a “ecosystem” of battery sales in China, with at least 500 battery swap stations originally scheduled to be built by the end of 2025, thus rising to 10,000 sockets in the long run.

At the signing ceremony this week, CATL confirmed that the two parties will “jointly build an integrated service network connecting ‘people, vehicles, energy and life’, which will provide standardized and scalable support for the realization of China’s dual carbon goals.”

Sinopec will provide the partnership with a broad national gas station network and energy infrastructure capabilities, while CATL will contribute its advanced battery technology as well as its Choco-Swap and Qiji battery swap solutions. Together, they aim to overcome the charging bottlenecks faced by passengers and commercial vehicle drivers in the country and build a “more effective, more convenient, cost-effective energy supplement network”.

CATL said it remains committed to “creating value for consumers through technological innovation, ensuring everyone has access to high-quality batteries and a better driving experience in the age of smart cars.”

“CATL, Sinopec in the Battery Switching Partnership” was originally created and published by the global Data-owned brand Just Auto.
