“I also say that we firmly believe that our international students have the same right to freedom of speech as everyone else… (uncomprehensible…boosh), let me also say I know that many communities today are mourning the absence of our graduate Mahmoud Khalil.”

Columbia University Acting President Claire Shipman met with Boos while speaking at a graduate outside the Butler Library.

The booing grew when she talked about international students, especially Mahmoud Khalil, a prominent figure in the pro-Palestinian student protest movement, who was detained in U.S. immigration and customs enforcement in March.

Earlier in May, Columbia University suspended more than 65 students due to its role in pro-Palestinian demonstrations that forced the closure of major campus libraries, a school official said.

The demonstrations were held in negotiations between the Columbia board and the Trump administration, which announced in March that the university had punished the university’s former Palestine protests by canceling hundreds of millions of dollars in research grants.
