AJ Preller discusses Padres’ deadline prospects

AJ Preller, president of Padres’ baseball business, made an appearance on MLB Network radio this weekend and discussed his thoughts on the roster, with a deadline approaching the end of the month.

“Get Davish, the King’s back will be huge,” Preller said, referring to the injured starter Yu Darvish and Michael King. “The bullpen is strong.’ We have a lot of different weapons in the pen. You can increase the strength. On the offensive side, it might be at the depth of the lineup. I think, like you mentioned, the top of the lineup should be strong… You have to be strong… You have to be strong… You have to be nine balls, I think that might be added for a few weeks and we’re going to help here for a few weeks.

It is understandable to add to the offense, as San Diego has some clear loopholes. Earlier this year, the club was reportedly looking for upgrades to catchers and left court. Behind the plate, the club did not get any offensive contribution Elias Díaz nor Martin Maldonado. The team has a collective .206/.269/.325 line from the receiving position. This means WRC+ is 70, only before Guardians, Nationals and Giants.

The situation in the left field is a bit complicated. Jason Heyward The position was for a while but struggled and was released. Gavin bed sheets Has taken over the game and performed well on the offensive end and is currently at the .264/.325/.451 hit line and 119 WRC+. However, he is not a particularly powerful outfield defender, so the monk may consider adding a left fielder to push the sheet back to the first base/designated batsman. That will make the plate appear Trenton Brookswho reached .200/.231/.400 this year.

How monks add these attractions will be an interesting situation. In recent years, club payrolls have been clearly an obvious problem, which has led to Juan Soto trading. In the most recent offseason, they have limited themselves primarily to one year of contracts. An exception is Nick PivettaA four-year agreement has been signed that has been loaded to reduce the financial impact of 2025.

Most importantly, the club has traded many prospects in recent years as they try to keep the major league roster talented. Their farm system is emphasized by two truly powerful young people Leo and Ethan Salas But all reports indicate that the priests are reluctant to have any of these two.

Putting everything together would be a tricky balance for preller, but he should have a lot of options, at least for the left field. As we all know, monks are Jarren Duranalthough this could be a long-term possibility, as Sox was hung in the American League game, and Duran controlled for three more seasons after that. Guys like it Ryan O’Hearn,,,,, Cedric Mullins,,,,, Jesús Sánchez,,,,, Andrew Benintendi,,,,, Mike Tauchman,,,,, Ramón Laureano and Adolis García There are some other possibilities. Behind the plate, old friend Kyle Higashioka and Gary Sánchez Available.

As for the bullpen mentioned by Preller, it is a kind of power. San Diego’s rescuers had a collective average of 3.25, which was third in the Grand Slam, trailing only the Giants and the Astronauts. But even a club with a strong relief group can add another or two arms, and injuries can always pop up and change the calculus, so the openness of the preller is understandable.

There may be more and more rotations. Starting depth has been a while since it wasn’t a strong lawsuit for the club, and it’s not surprising to see their goal of escalating there, although their aggressiveness in the department, as Preller suggests, may depend on what’s going on in the coming weeks.

Darvish has stood out all year round due to inflammation in the elbow, but will stand out from the injured list today. He will jump into the spin combination, which also includes Pivetta, Dylan stops and Randy Vásquez. There was a tight nerve on King’s shoulder, and his position was undecided.

Playoff rotations for Pivetta, Darvish and King will be good, but it’s unclear how realistic the Padres expects it to be. Vásquez’s ERA this year is 3.79, but the peripherals are quite inspiring. He still has an option, so maybe Padres might consider grabbing another starter and slamming him into a minor, although they have to weigh other needs while also considering their payroll and the prospect cost of taking that action.
