Several trails and campsites in the Angeles National Forest have reopened to visitors since the January fire, U.S. Forest Service officials announced.
At some point, about 17% of the 700,000 acres of forest were closed due to the fire damage caused by the Eaton fire in January and the bridge fire in September.
However, as maintenance progressed, the path gradually reopened. Here are the trails, campgrounds and other locations that are available again on Friday:
- Chantry Flat Recreation Area
- All Gabrielino National Entertainment Trails
- Gould Mesa Camping Site
- Swiss picnic spot
- Sturtevant Trail
- Strong loop
- Up and down Wintercreek Trail
However, many other roads and locations in the forest will be closed by the end of the year.
The following roads remain closed:
- Chaney Trail Road
- Lowe Road
- Millard Parking Lot
- Millard Canyon Road
- Mount Wilson Turnpike (below Mt. Wilson Trail)
- Wilson Hill Turnpike (below Henninger Flats)
- Wilson Hill Road Henninger Apartment
- Disappointed Ridge Road
Angeles National Forest Trail is closed:
- Wilson Mountain
- idlehour trail
- Castle Canyon Trail
- Sam Merrill Trail (including lower, middle and upper)
- Echo Mountain Trail
- Lowe Trail Mountain (Eastern and West)
- Tom Sloan Trail
- Bear Canyon Trail
On January 7, multiple fires broke out in Southern California, claiming at least 30 lives and destroying more than 16,000 houses and other buildings. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
